First Time Applying For Disability

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Fort Pierce, FL

I have applied for disability for the first time. I have fibro but also have rheumatoid arthritis, ddd, djd and neuropathy. I've been scheduled for a psychological evaluation. I was under the impression first time is an automatic denial. Do they usually do a psyche evaluation the first time applying?

Members shared their varied experiences applying for Social Security disability, with timelines ranging from approval within nine months to ongoing battles lasting three to four years, and many emphasized that first-time denials are common but not automatic. Several members recommended hiring a disability lawyer or using services like Citizens Disability to navigate the complex process, noting that lawyers typically work on contingency and are paid a percentage of back pay not exceeding $6,000. A recurring theme was frustration with required psychological evaluations, which many described as brief and superficial, alongside encouragement to thoroughly document medical records, emphasize limitations honestly, and persist through appeals if necessary.

I'm assuming every state is a little different but I'm not 100% sure of that. I applied for disability once I feel very fortunate I received my first check within 9 months of filing . You don't automatically get denied your first time tho but I have heard it's common to. I didn't have to have a psych consult or see a judge. I used citizens disability and they handled everything and I helped by collecting medical records from most of my drs.

They sent me to a phyc and I was only there like 10 min. She said I was ok. It was a joke. I'm waiting to see a judge now, this is my 3rd appeal. I have Citizens Disability working for me now.

Yes they will send you for a psychological eval...it's kind of a joke. First of all, the doctors they send you to are all their drs. So, their going to say your ok, I've been trying for 4 years, denied first two, the third I hired a disability lawyer been 2yrs and just now scheduled to go in front of judge in January. I wish you luck, but you may have to get lawyer. I didn't want to, but felt I had to. Hugs to you
