Why Do Muscle Spasms Happen with Fibromyalgia?

Muscle spasm can have a few different causes, from simple dehydration to overwork to neurological disorders. Fibromyalgia is pretty clearly a dysfunction in the central and peripheral nervous system, though most doctors were taught in school that it's a musculo-skeletal disorder, the name "Fibromyalgia" even suggests that the disorder is muscle based. The reality is that our nervous system is dysfunctional, and it manifests in a lot of different ways, and muscle spasm is one of them.

Also, I'm not entirely sure how any doctor can diagnose Myofacial Pain Syndrome on top of Fibromyalgia. Typically, MPS is basically the muscle pain+tightness of Fibro without the crushing fatigue, Fibrofog, IBS, or anything else. MPS may develop into Fibro (there's a tentative connection), but if you already have Fibro, getting a diagnosis of MPS is basically your doctor throwing his hands in the air and yelling, "I don't know what's wrong with you."

My dr said it is called myofacial pain syndrome, which is part of fibromyalgia. Supposedly it is your brain sending a wrong message to that part of the body.

So sorry you have to live like this. I know and understand where you're coming from. I had 8 injections in my back yesterday. Then I came home groggy. My doctor puts me out. Now I am sore today and at least tomorrow. I will be fine for a while but after a couple of weeks it starts all over. My hubby is good. He does the vacuuming and the laundry. I don't feel there has been enough research done to exactly get to the bottom of the disease. I feel for you. May God Bless you. Soft hugs.

As a nurse I should know the medical answer. I'm sorry i do not. My thinking on the subject is it's like a seizure when too many neurons are firing. I believe too many nerves get upset or inflamed and a muscle spasm happens.

Please if your getting injections, be careful. The medicine will do a number on your bones, I know after years of getting them, only suppose to get no more than 3 a year, I was getting 20 plus. Changed doc and he recommends RFA radio frequency ablation. It burns the nerve endings sending the pain and spasm signals to the brain. I have had a total of 5 in the past 2 years, and very rarely have the spasm I used to.
