What Do You Think Of Topamax?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Butler, PA

I was put on Neurontin 8 years ago. I built up a tolerance and 3 months ago I was put on Lyrica. I have gained 20 pounds. So today I'm starting to wean off it to try Topamax. Any suggestions on the pros and cons?

Topamax didn't help me but Cymbalta has. I'm having a really, really bad flare up today but overall I have fewer since being on it. Weight??? It's a constant battle for me with all of my meds

For me, Topomax was a wonder drug. I was having optical migraines, my muscles were jerking all the time, and it felt like I was being stabbed in various areas of my body. Once I started on topamax all that settled down. I'm not sure that any of that was really related to the fibromyalgia or if something else was going on but I'm happy to say that I feel much better because I don't have those weird feelings too much anymore. There are some side effects that are a bit hard. Food doesn't taste the same. Meat especially is hard for me to eat because it just doesn't taste right. You have to see your eye doctor on a regular basis because it can affect your sight. I don't remember the other side affects but you can look them up.
The hard thing about fibromyalgia is that what works for one of us will not necesarily work for someone else. It's all trial and error. Then when you finally get a combo that works for you, your body decides it doesn't like it anymore and you have to start all over again.
Another con is that the insurance companies don't like to pay for it so your doctor has to get it preapproved. The generic came out last year but I can't take it so now the insurance company really doesn't like me.
I hope you have good luck with Topamax. Let me know how you do.

I've been on topamax for a decade for other issues and when Lyrica was bs for me we decided to up my topa. I've had a reduction in skin sensitivity issues, but my joints are still a huge pain issue as is muscle weakness. It's only been 3 weeks.

Same here totally ineffective. On it twice for migraines et another issue but didn't notice any diff. in my fibro symptoms. But all meds work diff. for ppl. So give it a try if it doesn't work then you can have MD wean you off that one. Just remember takes 4-6 wks at least to notice any diff. et sometimes longer. God bless et hope it helps. Hugs sent your way.
