Root Canal And Fibro?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Huntsville, ON

I am wondering if anyone has had a root canal while having fibro? If so was it a long recovery due to the sensitivities of our mouths? Did you have lots of pain during and/or after? How long did it take to recover?
I have very sensitive nerves in my mouth and it takes forever to freeze me, sometimes it doesn't work at all.
Thanks!

For so many years my dentist had a hard time numbing my teeth also. I recently told him I have Fibro and then he smiled and told me ,,,that is why its been so hard trying to get you numb . A root canal is really a small surgery. Yes , I always had pain and any air getting in to my mouth at that time made me climb the walls . Back then I didnt know I actually had Fibro.. Now it explains the pain of the exposed nerves in my mouth. Hope that helped you a bit... gentle hugs and wishing you a good day.

@A MyFibroTeam Member,
Anything and everything the dentist does sends me spiraling down flare up highway: cleaning, fillings, root canals, preps for crowns, extractions, even that little plastic covered film for X-rays.

A year ago this month, September, I opted for an extraction due to the alternative costs, my share after insurance. It did not hurt, but the injections did for days. I can't take pain killers except acetaminophen. For dental procedures, I use the liquid adult extra strength for a day.

Earlier in the year, my dentist had proposed a root canal + crown to save another tooth. I told her I couldn't afford over $300 for the root canal plus $430 for the crown. She offered to try the crown alone to prevent irritation. So far that has worked for a year and a half.

Decades before my diagnosis, I endured 8 visits for a root canal with 7 injections of Novacaine that still didn't work. I now know it was due to fibromyalgia. It was so traumatic that I chose to just let them go.

Prior to my current dentist, who is very gentle, I finally found someone who was patient enough and intelligent enough to numb me with 1 or 2 injections. Even so, it took days to calm my entire body down. The mere thought of going causes pain, pain and more pain. I wear partial dentures and would advise anyone to hold on to your teeth if you can. My previous dentist retired, and there is no one I can find like him.

Everyone is different, as you can see from the previous answer. I had much more than mild trauma, except during the extraction. I keep planning to go back but dreading it profusely at the same time.

God be with you.

I was wondering if anyone else had dental problems too. The dentist said all my teeth problems are related to my medical problems but I wasn't sure if it was the fibro. I had to go get a root canal but when the Endodontist checked my tooth they said that there was too much decay and they had to extract the tooth. It's so weird that all of the sudden I developed all these dental problems because when I was 15 I had never had a cavity EVER!! And one day my front tooth just crumbled out of my mouth... yes crumbled.. teeth aren't suppose to crumble. So I went to the dentist and got it fixed but they wanted to do X-rays when I had just had X-rays done 3 months prior to the tooth crumbling. They came back and said I had 13 cavities!!!!! Yes 13!! Now ever since I've been trying to get them fixed. Now when I went to the dentist recently they told me I have cavities on almost all my teeth! Now I have $7,000 worth of dental work to get done... and I take care of my teeth 3 times a day so I don't get it.. Motrin and Tylenol 3 helps manage the pain. Hope this helps. If anyone else is having dental problems with fibro please let me know!!!

After reading all of the teams answers I realized that it is important for us to find a dentist that has an understanding of fibro and may even use alternative numbing medications and/or gas. Last time I had a cavity filled and I took a half a Xanax 2.5 mg before I went in and that helped. I too have had problems staying numb but I just thought it was because I am ADHD. Who knows I really get nervous when I go to the dentist - enough to impact a flare - so that is why anti-anxiety med helps. I like the idea of the adult liquid tylenol I will use that too. Prayer works too of course - probably should have put this first on the list........sending prayers with good intentions for less pain and peace of mind - music helps too - wear ear phones and your favorite music.
