I have dealt with varying degrees of back pain over the past 40 years. I get knots or "ropes" on either side of my spine, which are muscle spasms. I get some relief with pressing against my fist or tennis ball. I also get nerve pain because of herniated discs, with radiation down my leg into my feet. The nerve blocks help for several weeks. Exercise that helps is mostly stretching and walking short distances. When it is really bad, I am in bed, alternating heat and ice packs.

I have this problem on the lower left side of my back, first due to degenerative disk disease, then last August I got a herniated disk in the lumbar region...insult on top of injury. I found a good TENS unit for less than 40$ on Amazon and found that that sometimes helps, as well as alternating heat and cold. When I was able to I did some swimming at the Y which helped too. Otherwise, the position that is comfortable is my recliner. My bed is useless, but that's just me. I hope you feel better.

Yes I get shooting pains all over at different times it doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing. I have a constant knot like pain in my back under my left rib. Unfortunately drs don't have a clue what it is. I think it's a combo of nerve and muscles spasms out of control. Good luck
