Seizures

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Kingston, OH

Has anyone else experienced seizures in their sleep after being diagnosed with Fibro? I recently experienced a small seizure and I'm not sure if this is common with fibro or related to my medication. I have never had seizures and I'm currently on Savella for treatment. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated!

Non-epileptic seizures or seizure-like symptoms can occur in fibromyalgia. I've had them myself. They are actually listed in an NHS UK booklet as a symptom. They are seen as a symptom that may occur during severe stress suffered by patients with fibromyalgia.

Scientific research also has tested patients with fibromyalgia and non-epileptic seizures.

74% suffered from psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, and 15% had physiological non-epileptic events.

In plain English, if I recall this right, a psychogenic event is a seizure that does not have the typical electrical sensations associated with epilepsy. Physiological non-epileptic can include a whole range of factors and subsets, one being people who suffer from sleep disorders. Everyone with fibromyalgia suffers from a sleep disorder, this is well substantiated in research over the last decade.

When I was sixteen or seventeen, I would get this type of problem in my sleep, so to me, it's just been a normal occurrence that happens every now and again. I also suffered from my twenties with sleepwalking which I was told was associated with my sleep disorder connected to fibromyalgia.

Night sleep seizures usually occur during sleep transition or during non-REM stage 2 sleep. As our sleep in research is hugely impacted, the fact that seizures of seizure-like symptoms exist is not really that surprising. But it can be a rarer symptom of fibromyalgia, certainly, it is not one of the frequently discussed symptoms. But it is not a stranger to me. Some people may never have this symptom, some might.

Of course, medications can have side effects as well so it is worth checking. For some people, not all, mixing tramadol with certain anti-depressants may in some cases cause symptoms of that appear like a seizure. But this would be a rarer reaction I'd imagine. You could ask your doctor if Savella would cause this type of symptom.

If they continue please visit the doctor to be tested in case it is epilepsy. But I'd imagine you are having the symptoms that began appearing in my life as a young adult. They can be scary but try not to get too scared. It's important to remember that with fibromyalgia sometimes a symptom can become less frequent at different times. It shifts and changes, it often, unfortunately, reveals new sides to its complexity. As a young girl, I struggled with the constant new symptoms. Well, I was only young then. I suppose it was natural to struggle at that age.

I hope this has helped you a little. I would write more about the subject, but I'm tired right now so going to take a rest.

Much love to you and hugs

I’ve never had a seizure, but that is one of the possible side effects of Savella -though, one of the more serious possible side effects- if ai were you I may consider seeing if there was another option available to you. Thats a scary side effect.

Prayers to you! ❤️

I do have seizures. Have had them for more than 8 years. Tramadol is one medication you should stay off. Look into your medication. Look it up and see if that is a side effect.
I do have seizures while sleeping. My dog makes me come out of it by licking my face and pawing me. She is not trained for it. Guess she just knows when something is wrong. I do also have them during the day.
Check your meds. They may not go together.

Actually, it did help with my chronic fatigue and fibro fog. I saw a significant change after I started taking Savella. It wasn't completely gone, but it was a noticeable difference. Unfortunately, it does not help with my pain.

Hey Harlow, I'd never heard of this medication which surprised me, as I studied them for years. I did a search and it does say do not prescribe to anyone with a history of Seizures. Has anyone in your family have Epilepsy? I'd get back to the Doc and say your not happy about the fact its giving you Seizures, even if they are minor. Other than the Seizures how are you? Is the medication helping with the pain? Knowing doctors they'd probably give you another drug on top to stop the Seizures. Be careful of Pregabalin, seems to be a new favourite of the GP's. Caused me some damage earlier this year. Hope you ok. xx
