Members discussed the guaifenesin protocol from Dr. Paul Amand's book, which some found validating in describing fibromyalgia symptoms, though several noted concerns about limited research evidence, small control groups, and the protocol's strict requirements around avoiding salicylates. Many shared that factors like hypoglycemia, tea consumption, and genetic predisposition can affect the protocol's success, with some members expressing skepticism about why more doctors don't recommend it if it works so well, while others appreciated the thorough symptom validation even if not pursuing the treatment. A recurring theme was the importance of doing personal research, staying informed about all treatment options including low-dose naltrexone and emerging genetic research at Boston Medical, and keeping an open mind about therapies that work differently for different people.

I read the book some years past. Of course I found it interesting, but like I said,I couldn't afford it. I wouldn't summarily discount his claim about fibromyalgia being genetic. He didn't have much evidence, but researchers at BostonMedical have found evidence of a genetic component. But genetics is far more complex than most of us think. Some diseases that have a genetic basis may need one or more triggers before they manifest. So for fibromyalgia, a person would need to have the right genetic markers, have gotten a serious virus such as Epstein Barr, then suffered an emotional or physical trauma. This is still in the theory stage for fibromyalgia, but I recently read that many cases of strep throat were actually cases of EB virus. This happened to me. I had a terrible case of strep throat in my 20s that wouldn't culture. They gave me antibiotics anyway. But I probably had a viral infection, possibly EB. EB also known as mono is very common. The researchers at BostonMedical have been doing clinical trials on a possible cure for fibromyalgia. I heard this on my local news last summer which we get out of Boston. I live on Cape Cod. I only get disability, which I got on many years ago. Good luck to you.

A book I'm reading called "The FibroManual" by Genevra Liptan MD. So far I think it's very informative. I got it from the library.

When I was diagnosed 24 years ago, this protocol was being discussed among people with fibromyalgia I met at a hugely attended support group in Northampton, MA. It was so large, almost 100 people that I didn't go back. It was overwhelming. But I started reading about and researching this "cough medicine" protocol. Guafenisin is a common ingredient in cough medicine ( thins the mucous). In the protocol the patient ingests copious amounts of this drug which is supposed to lessen the symptoms of fibromyalgia. My concerns were how to get this much stuff, and how to pay for it. After all this time, I wonder, if this treatment were so successful, then why aren't doctors putting their patients on it? But I understand how someone with this disease wants no stone unturned. Just be very thorough in doing your research. God bless you. ❤
