Nail Changes

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

So I just got my first gel manicure, and my nails kind of ache. Is that normal after the first set or is it because of the fibro? Does anyone have any ideas or had this happened?

I experience pain sometimes for over 24 hours after acrylics, even just a fill!

You should try the fake nails that you glue on yourself at home. I've never had any pain with them besides putting WAY too much glue om and it got on my skin. They're really easy to do and a lot cheaper than going to a salon.

Thank you, you just sort of answered a question for me! My nails have been so crappy lately, breaking, peeling, splitting etc and I have been thinking of getting fake nails which I have never had in my life! Usually I can grow my own nails no problem but over the years they have gotten so crappy with fibro! I’ve been wondering if it would hurt only because the backs of my hands are so painful so I thought fake nails might really bother me although I’d feel better inside! Thanks for asking this question and it will be interesting to read others answers!!

Just my opinion and according to studies - I just can't imagine that any of those chemicals can be good for anyone. If you are a label reader, some of the ingredients found in the nails themselves and the products used along with are: formaldehyde, toluene, acetonitrile (acetone), methacrylic acid, etc. These can cause respiratory problems, eye and skin irritations, and prolonged use can damage kidneys and eyes. Not to mention the damage to the nails themselves. The health issues are probably worse on the nail techs because of the really prolonged exposure to all the chemicals, but if we already suffer from our own set of triggers, why would you want to add chemicals that have already been proven to be toxic to your body.
