I went to the doctor because of a bad cough and sore throat...She said that there was something in the air and many pts. were coming in with the same complaints, of course, there was nothing she could do. That evening I started getting hoarse and that's when everything changed I have been without a voice for a week now

Well, fellow warriors, I have an answer for you. It is called Muscle Tension Dysphonia and it is real but there are techniques to help get your voice back or get control of it. Tension does not have to start in the throat or vocal cords for tension to eventually reach that point. Tension can be anywhere in your body and as we know we often have various types of tension especially with fibro. I will give you some Muscle Tension Dysphonia vocabulary you can look up to help you better understand it: muscle tension dysphonia, diaphragmatic breathing, confidential voice, and easy onset.
* Awareness be aware of the tension. "Are you tense?" Tension can come from anywhere and can come from the simplest for to the most complex. ex: stress, lack of sleep, headaches, the way you use your voice when talking, laughing, coughing etc. Tight muscles in most of your body: neck, back, arms, legs, where ever you have muscles. It can also be caused by arguments or disagreements. Chronic Pain, Things that we don't think about.
Look up Muscle Tension Dysphonia on the internet for a more precise description and then look up the vocabulary. I have a list of 7 practices I have to do daily. I hope this helps someone. I'll list the tips/practices if anyone is interested.

I have noticed hoarseness and voice loss a lot more often than before I was diagnosed with fibro. I haven't read about this being normal for us though. Best to get checked to be sure.
Keep us posted.

Hi Mary, not related to fibro. Related to/diagnosis vocal cord misfunction . If there is something in the air like some kind of odor...candle, cologne , etc ...I loose my voice if I leave the room or building my voice slowly returns. At times I will not smell anything I loose my voice but something is in the air I'm allergic. I hope u find out what bothers u. When I get a cold or virus I always loose my voice. I wish u the best. HUGS !!!
