Members overwhelmingly confirmed that insomnia is a recognized and frustrating symptom of fibromyalgia, often occurring even when exhausted, with some describing it as painsomnia. Several members shared practical strategies that have helped them, including warm baths or showers with Epsom salts before bed, magnesium and melatonin supplements, valerian root or chamomile tea, meditation and white noise, sleep clinic referrals to rule out oxygen-related sleep disorders, and various medications like clonazepam, trazodone, amitriptyline, and prazosin. A recurring theme was the importance of experimenting with different approaches since melatonin works for some but causes headaches in others, and finding what works requires patience, self-advocacy with doctors, and often a combination of natural remedies and medical support.

Insomnia or Painsomnia are recognized symptoms of Fibro. I had a really bad time with it last year. Things that ended up helping were: a warm shower (to loosen stiff muscles) right before bed. A warm bath would do too, but I'm not a bath person (too hard to get up out of lol). I would sprinkle epsom salts in the tub and then plug the drain while I showered so I was still getting the effect. Also tea with valerian root and chamomile. I can't take melatonin as it gives me a vicious headache. Also, meditation, white noise, aromatherapy lotion (sleep or calming scents). I also take Clonazepam at night for REM sleep behavior disorder, but I can still have insomnia. It doesn't knock me out. Sorry you are suffering. Huge hugs.

I can’t take melatonin, but it does help many. Magnesium is very important and helps before bedtime.

Emma most people with Fibro seem to have insomnia. It seems to be one of the many symptoms and commonalities. It’s sooo frustrating, because we’re absolutely exhausted but can’t sleep. I hope you find something that helps you. Sending you positive thoughts with gentle hugs😊💜🦋💜, Deb

I've had insomnia for over 20 years. I had taken tomazepam for a few years, I think that's what Mary was talking about. It's not really good for you so I stopped. Melotonin only helps me sleep for 4 hours but I like how it's natural medicine. Now I take prazosin, which is a bp med. but it's for night terrors since I have PTSD. I think with fibro, no matter how tired you are, it ties in with insomnia, unfortunately. I wish I had a Jacuzzi. That helps me sleep and helps with pain. I get to do that next weekend in Lake Geneva. It gives me something to look forward to! Hugs my friends!
