Does Anyone Experience Seizures, Cluster Seizures Or Grand Maul Seizures?
Asking because one of the fairly newly diagnosed Spoonies is have as many as 15+ per day! Want to make sure it is not the fibro
I had a variety of epileptic seizures (grand mal, petit mal, partial, absence, etc.) from the time I was 10 until I was 20 or so. After a diagnosis of being free of epilepsy, I don't doubt they still happen, just fewer and far between. It's like @A MyFibroTeam Member said, there are many reasons, physical or emotional. It's just another way the body communicates that things are off-balance chemically, whether from physical or emotional reasons. If a person has PTSD, for instance, those events can actually cause a person's body chemistry to change, leaving us to adapt in new ways.
Without testing such as blood work, an EEG and an MRI, it's really hard to say what is causing the seizures, but my best advice is to make sure that person is looked after - bed rest and quiet for the rest of the day or more depending on the severity, assistance with tasks that may require more physical endurance and/or coordination than he/she has, etc. I highly recommend replenishing electrolyte stores: they are easily and rapidly depleted when the neurons start firing so quickly like that. Sometimes it even helps to have a magnesium supplement. Over time, I grew very fond of coconut water for just that reason. Best of luck to you both!
Be well - Michelle
I am allowed to drive now Sissy. I couldn't drive growing up but after having brain surgery and that took 2 years to recover from I could drive.

Interestingly there are some scholarly articles discussing fibromialgia and seizure connection. It seems to me that psychogenic non-epileptic seizures are associated with fibro to a degree, after reading the articles. Cluster and grandmal seizures are not discussed.

What are non-epileptic seizures?
In a seizure people lose control of their body, often causing
shaking or other movements of arms and legs, blacking out, or
both. Seizures can happen for different reasons. During
epileptic seizures, the brain produces electrical impulses, which
stop it from working normally. Non-epileptic seizures look a
little like epileptic seizures, but are not caused by abnormal
electrical activity in the brain.
Non-epileptic seizures happen because of problems with
handling thoughts, memories, emotions or sensations in the
brain. Such problems are sometimes related to stress.
However, they can also occur in people who seem calm and
relaxed. Often people do not understand why they have
developed non-epileptic seizures.
Kitty,
You are doing The Best thing, right now--Being A Friend! I want to Thank You for showing Compassion to someone who is going through this. Many have no idea how much this means.
Yes. I've had epilepsy since *6 months old. It is a *Neurological Disorder. A "Chemical Imbalance." Though I've never understood the meaning to this. To me, pills will NEVER replace a brain's natural chemicals. They are "man made." Yet, *Marijuana is a plant and is known for helping a lot of people who have problems with seizures. But this "Free Country" where I live, it is considered "illegal. In some States, It is Legal. I find it interesting how someone can drink alcohol and drive. Yet I'm treated worse than a criminal! For those who do NOT have epilepsy, be Thankful. If my husband dies before me, there isn't a neighbor on this street who would take me to the store. So what Kitty is doing is extremely unusual and friendly. I'm So Proud of her! Many who have that driver's license and vehicle overlook those who do not. This world has become VERY Self-Centered. When having epilepsy, one tends to notice this a lot more. Plus *who their friends are--or aren't.
MANY different things can cause a seizure. When I was an infant, I had a high fever of 104 to 106 degrees. It was said back then, that it "burned some of the cells from my brain, causing 'blackouts.'" They also claimed that dead cells could not be replaced. I have recently researched this and found that our brains lose dead cells and grows new cells all the time! So, why did I keep having a mild form of epilepsy? I do not know. They also did a Spinal Tap on me to check for Meningitis.
I can tell from different symptoms if a "blackout" is going to happen.
1. All this CONSTANT, LOUD NOISE I have to endure around me. I can't run from my own house. There is construction across the street and a house being almost completely re-done next door. 5 to 6 days a week from 6a.m. until 6p.m.
2. Loud volume on TV or radio. THIS, I can turn down. But today while trying to shop at BED,BATH&BEYOND, some of the WORST, Loud Music was playing! I didn't stay very long.
3. "Ringing In The Ears" I cannot get rid of this. But there have been times when a certain *pitch "triggers" a seizure.
4. Stress, for sure.
As one gets older, they usually tend to notice what causes certain types of seizures. I remember when younger, hearing certain words would bring back certain memories, causing a "blackout." Learn to be your own "Security Guard." Catch those rascals when they happen--or at least know WHAT caused them to "break and enter." Sometimes, doing this gives us a better understanding and we "catch the villain in the act." That *villain, being a seizure.
