Fibro, Hypermobility And Severe Pain In Ribs

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

So I recently got diagnosed with hypermobility in my back, as I’m sure everyone with fibro knows pain is nothing new and my back seems to get the worst of it. Standing for too long is an issue normally and sitting tends to make my back burn. However today a new symptom has presented in that my ribs are in almost unbearable pain when I sit up straight. The pain is in my sides and my middle back. I have not knowingly injured myself and my back usually makes a lot of cracking noises but nothing has… read more

The fact that you mentioned hypermobility caught my attention. For 20 plus years I was told I had fibro until I saw a neurologist who noticed I was hypermobile and referred me to a genetic doctor to be assessed for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Turns out this is what I have along with fibro and some other issues. If you are hypermobile you should ask your doctor to refer you to a genetic doctor. EDS is a defective gene that affects the collagen in our body. Collagen is the glue that holds our joints together. It's important to get a proper diagnosis because the treatment plan is different and some things are to be avoided like chiropractor, steroid medication and some excercise can further damage joints. EDS is not very well know to GP so you might want to research it online first. Many symptoms of EDS are "double joints"migraine, Raynaud's, tachycardia, enlarged aorta, varicose veins, stretch marks, dislocation or subluxation, gastric problems etc....

You better have it checked. Might be costochondritis.
You can click on picture to enlarge to read it. It is part of fibromyalgia.

I too have hypermobility and rib pain mainly in the bottom rib and sternum. Same with standing or sitting in the same positions for too long. Though its more I lose feeling get weak. But I find to keep my legs awake and my abdomen and ribs from hurting bending my legs and putting my feet up. It doesnt look comfy and I get some strange stars but its the only way I can get comfy. Try it out! I hope it helps you out! Also heat and stretching helps with the rib pain for me at least. try stuff out until you find something that helps

Sounds like you have Costochondritis it is another symptom of Fibromyalgia that affects the rib cage I also get very painful breasts and find difficulty in breathing if I over exert myself. Pains in the back.

Costochondritis can also cause muscle spasms in your chest and sometimes pain in either your left or right sides that can feel like a heart attack but they are muscular.

Unfortunately nothing can be done about it even fibromyalgia medications don't always do anything either.

Mention Costochondritis to your Doctor as well.
