Accomodations?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Kitchener, ON

Does anyone get accomodations at school or work or even just around town? Anything that works well? How do you go about a conversation about accomodations? I nearly pass out about everyday and my legs go numb for no reason. This is problematic because Im 16 and in school with 3 floors. I dont want something obvious because well we are still looking for diagnosis so I wont know how to respond when people ask. As well as I think my mother will be upset and maybe mad if I start using help. Im sick… read more

As for accommodations with your school, you should have that conversation with the school. But you have to be honest & let them know how much it tires you out.
As for your mother, you should also tell her. I'm sure she goes with you when you go to the doctor, I'm not sure why she would get mad at you for asking for help if it concerns your health.
You should get your diagnosis to make sure from the rheumatologist or neurologist.

@A MyFibroTeam Member - I remember from your other posts that for whatever reason your mom is not understanding of your problems. I agree with the other posters who suggested first talking with you school counselor. Explain that you don't have a firm diagnosis yet, you may have fibro, mom isn't understanding situation, but here it is....and explain. I hope this helps. Your friend, Pat

Even my 16 year old son agrees...speak with your school counselor...I’m so sorry you feel your mother would be upset with you... I hope you can find a way to speak to her

Fin I’m sorry you’re through this so young💜. I dont know how high schools work anymore, but is there a counselor you can have this conversation with? I understand you want a diagnosis first, but if you talk with counselor just be honest and explain your situation/condition. Maybe if you talk with mom it wouldn’t be as bad as you think😊. I hope you get help in this, because you deserve it💜. Sending you gentle hugs💜🦋💜, love Deb

I'm so sorry your're dealing with this in high school, I developed fibro the summer before I started college and I had to take a leave of absence from my dream school and go to community college, where I'm currently taking classes. My accommodations include a note taker and being allowed to record lectures, though the only accommodation I have used is getting extra test time and taking the test in a distraction free environment (because of the fibro fog). I wish there were mobility related accommodations at my current school because that is the only thing that would be very helpful. Idk what your school has in that category, I know at bigger schools they can help you get around on a cart/bus.
