Are Severe Leg And Foot Cramps Fibromyalgia Symptoms?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Flushing, NY

I started developing new symptoms and am wondering if they are related to fibromyalgia. If I try and stretch my legs, I get severe leg or foot cramps. They are so bad that I become immobilized.

Oh yes, severe leg, foot, arm and neck cramps were one of the first symptoms I had, before I knew I had FM (I was getting charlie horses in places I didn't think were possible!) Magnesium is the only thing that slowed them down (magnesium deficiency is common in FM). I can't take the oral supplements, even the high end ones, my stomach can't tolerate them, but magnesium oil applied to skin works wonders for me. You can get it in spray form too. I now apply it morning and evening, every day, and hardly get cramps anymore - if I do, they are not severe, and usually happen because I have way overdone it. If you do try magnesium (in any form) go low and slow, as it can have gastrointestinal effects if you overdo it.

I have had fibro for 30 years and never had a problem until last year. I woke up and flexed my foot stretchong and it went into a charlie horse that lasted for 10 days. I dont know how i survived it. My doctors have never heard of it until i told them about my horrible luck. I take magnesium and potassium daily and drink water constantly. I found hylands pills for leg cramps at walmart for about $7. It is all natural and helps alot. If i get a charlie horse in the night, i take one immediately and it calms right down. They have been a lifesaver. Anyone who gets cramps, please try them.

I made a point of drinking a lot of water because I assumed that’s why I was getting them. Unfortunately, I still got them.

I have also found the Hyland pills for debilitating leg cramps. I use the pm ones so I can try to get a little more rest because mine always happen between 5:00am and 6:00am. They have melatonin as an ingredient in the pm’s. I use those, muscle relaxers, and a very good massager. Helps most times. If not I have to take pain meds just to be able to get out of bed that day. They are horrible and you never know when they are going to strike!! My Doctor does blood tests quite often to see where my magnesium level is. Most of the time it doesn’t make any difference. They have a mind of their own unfortunately😢

@ Sueny hi those cramps ate terrible. I take magnesium vitamins everyday as well but the ladies I swim with told me to buy GLYCERIN only about $3 or $4 in Wal-Mart in the foot section. Rub it on your cramp or just rub in the areas that cramp. You will feel a big difference. It takes the cramps away. Try it. Hugs and Prayers
