Hey, Jerri --

Yeah -- that is one of those scary symptoms that can occur for a mumber of reasons with Fibro, be it from excess sinus drainage aggrivating trigger points located in the neck, Sjrogen's Syndrome, or even doing a lot more talking or singing than usual. I also have my throat close like that when either trying to take my medicine, mid swallow or when blowing my nose. . . .it's a rather startling annoyance, more than anything. . . .but can at times be considerably troubling. Since mine is caused from continual sinus drainage due to the trigger points that are activated with fibro within my nasal passages, I have success most times when I use heat across or around my neck and shoulders -- a heated throw works wonders if it is due mostly to nerve activation or muscles/gland involvement.

I have had this problem since the '80s but like many other things never related it to my fibro, but ti esophageal reflux. What I have learned is not to panic when this happens, as it truly isn't "choking", but rather, with me, anyway, it's like the food is kind of on a shelf and can't go up or down. I can't seem to swallow, and seem to be paralyzed in the moment. Like some of the others have suggested, a glass of very cold water close by is a true ally, and a drink of it seems to shock my body out of the temporary paralysis, then all is good. I have found that as I relax in my retirement, that fewer and fewer episodes happen. So, I do believe that stress is a factor in this symptom also.

I have problems quite often with swallowing. Meat or rice gets in my throat and nothing will go past it. I will regurge saliva and sometimes the food that is holding up the mechanics of food going down. I have gastroparises and my stomach holds food up to 9 hours. So I usually eat one meal a day and drink lots of fluids with my meals. This seems to help some.
