Medical Marijuana For Pain

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Smithsburg, MD

I know of someone that says marijuana helps with chronic pain and after ten years of trying things I am at my wits end. I am hurting so much. I wondered if any of you have tried medical marijuana and how it worked for you? Thank you.

I use it. It's the only thing that cuts the pain for me. There are a few things you need to know about marijuana it's self and about the different ways to consume it.

STRAINS
Marijuana (MJ) comes in a dizzying number of strains. For someone just starting to look at it, it can be incredibly confusing. There are two basic types of MJ, Indica and Sativa. They're two different species of the same plant, and they have some different morphological characteristics. Indicas are generally considered to be more sedative while sativas are more "energetic." My recommendation when you're just starting out is to try a little bit of everything and see what helps you the most. I find Indicas better for pain, but some people (especially if you're not a veteran smoker) find they get stuck in the couch with them.

CANNABINOIDS
You're probably familiar with THC, but there are dozens of other cannabinoids in MJ. Cannabinoids are the active ingredients in MJ. CBD (Cannabinidiol) is perhaps the second most well known cannabinoid. If you're worried about getting high but still want to try out medical cannabis, consider looking for high CBD products. Interestingly, CBD appears to counteract the psychoactive effects of THC.

Be VERY careful of any product claiming to be high in CBD but legal in all 50 states - the oil in these concoctions is derived from the hemp plant, which is very closely related, and while legal, the FDA has found more then half of these products contain no CBD at all.

CONSUMING
Smoking is still the most common way to take it, but there are other options. "Vaping" where one heats the dried herb without burning it is pretty popular, because it's not nearly as harsh as smoking and doesn't smell as strongly. You also have wax or 'dabs' which is basically the cannabinoids removed from the plant into a sticky ball of wax that can then be heated, doesn't smell and is HIGHLY concentrated. And, of course, there's always the classic magic brownie. If you decide to make your own baked goods, do your research.

I'm more than happy to expand on any of this if you have further questions. =)

I've used CBD oil and have had good luck with it. I wrote about my experience on my blog at http://fedupwithfatigue.com/complementary-medic...

I haven't tried it myself (stuff makes me vomit), but I know someone who has and it worked well. At first, he was on Marinol, the prescription verion, but found the organic to work better.
