Has Anyone Else Been Referred To Psychological Support With Fibro?
I finally got to see a pain specialist a few weeks back, but all he said was he thought psychological support was the only option to try to get to the root cause of the fibro and to manage the pain. He told me no medications help fibromyalgia. I'm really confused and again feel there is no hope, I know medications don't eliminate all pain and symptoms but surely there's something out there that can help, I've tried most alternative therapies and herbal etc but not many prescription meds. Fibro is real. Seeing a therapist can help because of the pain that is lived with on a daily basis. I take Cymbalta for the fibro, neropathy, and RA. No drugs are going to fully take the pain away. The reason is that fibro is also connected to our emotions, and the weather can affect fibro too.
I think he is sending you to a Psychologist for the wrong reason. Seeing a Psychologist who specializes in pain management is one thing but going to find out what caused your Fibro sounds counter productive. First off, it is impossible to pinpoint what caused Fibro since they don't know for sure what causes it yet. It could be a genetic factor. Pretty much every human being has some kind of trauma in their life. Some have Fibro and some do not. Second, it coud take months or years of reviewing all the negative things that have happened in your life. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to learn to accept the fact that you have a chronic illness and also learn how to cope? It sounds like this Dr. is one that thinks that Fibro is a psychological condition. This is only my opinion.
You are correct in that it is a physical anomaly that causes the Fibro. Seeing a psychologist may help
in (like you said) coping with a chronic illness.
@A MyFibroTeam Member Mine was most definitely caused by a major trauma, but that is in the past. It happened. Rehashing it over and over again is not going to cure my muscle pain and fatigue. Once you have Fibro, you have Fibro. I'm just saying that I think counselling should focus on living the best life possible despite having Fibro unless a person feels they need counselling for the traumatic event. In my case I did see a Psychologist for a year after the event. It did not prevent Fibro from happening and it did not help with the pain.
If you have a lot of stress in your life it can seem to cauae your fibromyalgia pain to be much worse. There are medications out there to help with fibromyalgia pain. This doctor must not deal with fibromyalgia or is unaware of what is out here and treatments that may help you to manage you symptoms. It sounds like you need a doctor that is educated on fibromyalgia and treats patients with fibromyalgia. Those would be my suggestions to you. Do some research on the doctor prior to and see if he/she treats fibromyalgia before any "new Dr." Appointments. Don't be afraid to ask questions and have you list of questions ready for your first consultation but mark the top priority ones in case time is limited. These were some of the things i have done
You should be able to find a Dr. whom is knowledged in fibromyalgia. Good luck abd I wish you the best.
