Ankles

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I find lately that my ankles keep going from under me. I'm not actually falling but it's like I'm going to. My left ankle is the worse and the pain is very bad. I got a strap for it but I don't think it's any good. Just wondering does anyone else's get this.

I worked for a Pedorthist and he always suggested orthopedic shoes and orthotics if the doctor ordered them. Sometimes people would have leg length discrepancies (unequal leg length) that would throw them off balance or an over-pronated foot ( when the foot is off balance due to weakness causing the foot to be turned inward. Using a cane or walker is good until you figure out the cause. A Podiatrist or Pedorthist could do a foot exam to check for this. The ankle itself may have weakness in the bone and if you have not went to your doctor it would be good to have the doctor check your ankles and maybe xray them to check the bone structure. It is good to know the underlying cause before buying braces and trying them due to the danger of falling or not knowing exactly what bones need support. I happen to be an LPN and always think it is best to have a physician check things out just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps.

Hi there @A MyFibroTeam Member....so ankles....uuuggghhhrrrfff! I have ALWAYS had problems with my ankles being weak...I suffered MANY sprains and strains over the years - mostly due to my hypermobility issues than to fibro. However since the Fibro Monster has come to live with me they aren't just weak...they will actually "pop" out of place which causes unbelievably sharp pains, makes my foot go a bit numb and is extremely hard to walk on. The ankle will eventually "pop" back into place once the swelling goes down but it is really difficult to walk for awhile afterward. Like the others mentioned I have to same problem with my hips too and have fallen a bunch of times as well...I don't go anywhere outside my house without my cane and always use a shopping cart at the store...even if all I'm getting is milk!

My ankles so far have just been swelling. I think that the team has given some good solid advice and I will keep it in mind should my ankles begin to give me more problems. I do agree to use a walking stick or cane to assure no falls. I get "dizzy spells" and so the falling is an issue. Be safe.
