Is It Just Fibromyalgia Or Is It More?
I feel deep down inside me that there is more wrong with me but all the doctors just agree on fibromyalgia. I can't find a doctor who will do blood work and go deeper. Anyone else feel this way or just me?
Get a different doctor. And fibromyalgia can and will effect in ways you have never thought. I get irregular heart rates during some of my flares. My rate will be at 68 and can instantly jump to 214 for a minute or two and suddenly go normal again.. You really need to listen to your body. And I had doctors for over 20 years tell me it was all in my head. I felt like I was crazy and know I am still learning more about it eveveryday.
@Penelop what is a functional doctor?
@A MyFibroTeam Member, that is the reason I gave up on conventional doctors. I started seeing a functional doctor. I can't wait until January 12, this will be my follow up appointment. She did several tests that no other doctor (including several specialists) I'm hoping to get answers to all my health problems. ππΌ
Frankly, that sounds very dangerous and the claim of it being very science based seems dubious at best. There are many diseases and disorders that the body cannot just heal from and regulate. I have bipolar disorder, a chronic, genetic chemical disorder in my brain. I can make lifestyle changes that help manage the symptoms, but that doesn't change the fact that I have an illness. I take medication because it manages that illness, just like I take medication to regulate my endocrine system because of PCOS. There are definitely problems with the current medical establishment, and there is a lot to be said for holistic care and non-medication based therapies, but they are most effective when used in conjunction with medication not in place of medication.
Sorry, I swear I answered this question...maybe it was on another post. I copied and pasted the following. I hope it help explain what functunal doctors do. In short, they don't slap a label on what's wrong with you then load you up on drugs to mask the symptoms. They look for the root of the problem
Traditionally a medical doctor uses drugs or hormones as therapeutic tools to deal with dysfunction or disease. For various conditions including low thyroid, diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and so on, the standard model of care is generally all the same. Your general practitioner could decide to treat you, or could elect to refer you to a specialist. A GP and specialist have access to the same basic tool: medication. The training in the standard model of care is to diagnose a disease and match that disease with a corresponding drug. The standard model of care works well for acute diseases, trauma, infection, and emergencies. Sadly, it fails miserably in the care of the chronic diseases that affect over 125 million Americans.
Chronic conditions - such as allergic, digestive, hormonal, metabolic and neurological problems β which most Americans suffer from on a daily basis, are finding solutions in the field of Functional Medicine.
So what exactly is Functional Medicine and how can it assist the millions of Americans dealing with chronic disease?
Here are 5 basic principles that define Functional Medicine:
1) Functional Medicine views us all as being different; genetically and biochemically unique. This personalized health care treats the individual, not the disease. It supports the normal healing mechanisms of the body, naturally, rather than attacking disease directly.
2) Functional Medicine is deeply science based. The latest research shows us that what happens within us is connected in a complicated network or web of relationships. Understanding those relationships allows us to see deep into the functioning of the body.
3) Your body is intelligent and has the capacity for self-regulation, which expresses itself through a dynamic balance of all your body systems.
4) Your body has the ability to heal and prevent nearly all the diseases of aging.
5) Health is not just the absence of disease, but a state of immense vitality.
Here lies the clear distinction and definition of Functional Medicine. Instead of asking, βWhat drug matches up with this disease?β Functional Medicine asks the vital questions that very few conventional doctors ask: βWhy do you have this problem in the first place?β and βWhy has function been lost?β and βWhat can we do to restore function?β In other words, Functional Medicine looks to find the root cause or mechanism involved with any loss of function, which ultimately reveals why a set of symptoms is there in the first place, or why the patient has a particular disease label.
