Surgery And Pain

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've heard stories from people who had surgery and their fibro pain got worse all over. Does this happen often? I'm going to have surgery soon on my neck and I'm very curious.

I just had 5 surgeries in the last year and another coming up on my neck as well. I think it caused me one of my worst flares in 11 years but only because I've had so many within 6 weeks apart. My first surgery I didn't notice it being any worse than normal and I've had a ton of surgeries since diagnosed. Everyone is different though and it can cause stress to the body and cause inflammation. Just be extra gentle on yourself and don't push yourself to get back to it quickly. Slow and steady with a good clean diet, lots of rest and water. I wish you the best of luck with your upcoming surgery. My neck surgery is in September and my last surgery was in May but I'm in the worst flare in a long long time so I may postpone because I'd like to be at a good starting point prior. I'm hoping this is my last surgery for a long time. Hugs and prayers for a speedy recovery and little to No flare up. I will say one thing though recovery does take longer and the pain control associated with the surgery may be a little more than the average person. Some Dr's don't get that you may need more pain medication than others and special care and consideration when treating your pain.

I've had a lot of different surgeries through the years and I think they made me feel worse for a while longer than someone without FM. The inactivity of recuperation is what does me in. I feel better when I can be busy and rest as needed.

I agree with @A MyFibroTeam Member 's advice. :)

I'm never too scared to have needed surgery I mean I'm an expert by now and I deal with pain every day anyway. Surgeries suck period for everyone. No one wants to be in pain on purpose but if it's needed I just bite the bullet at least I know I'm going to sleep for a few hours. Lol.

KellyLee, remember everybody is different. Our pain and tolerance for pain is different. Praying for you.

Ok I will admit it hurt but it was necessary for my shoulder. After 6 months I was fully recovered. I did pt for 2 months. Then just made sure I stretched to keep range of motion every day. Even now if I don't stretch the pain returns and shoulder will re freeze. I was a lot better after three months w minimal pain. Point is you must keep up pt! Good luck. Don't worry about it. I've had surgery three times knees and shoulder. Don't let people scare you. I am stronger and healthier than I've ever been
