Do Any Of You Use Gabapentin?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I went to my doctor today for my annual physical and he suggested gabapentin since naproxen didn’t work for my fibro pain. I’ve never heard of it before and am a bit apprehensive to try it since my body doesn’t react very well to medication. I’ve been researching it since I got home, but would like to hear of any personal experiences that any of you might have had. Thanks in advance!

Found it very helpful but only on low dose. I am not a med person. It's the nerve supressant part of Lyrica and so doesn't have the horrible side effects. It's only effective with nerve pain though. I started on 100 2x a day so fatigue was not an issue.

I have been on it for 5 years and it works perfectly to eliminate my nerve pain. I still have all the other aches and whatnot, but not that. Gabapentin for the first 2 weeks or so made me ridiculously tired (think falling asleep sitting up at the dinner table kind of tired), but after that I was fine. Also at one point the doctor titrated the dose too quickly and my feet and hands swelled up, which went away when we slowed the increases. In addition, it can act as a mood balancer in some people (usually bipolar people) and for that I have to consider it, in my case, a miracle drug. I have been stable for the last 5 years which is a lifetime record.

It does not work for everyone, and if it doesn't, you might try Lyrica - it's a related compound and approved for fibromyalgia. It did not work for me but it does for many.

I couldn't take it as it made me worse, however everyone is different.

If your body does not react well with medication don’t use Gabapentin. It made my Fibro symptoms much much worse.

I have been on gabapentin for 7+ yrs. It took a little while to find the right doseage, but my current dose has helped a little. I am super sensitive to most meds so in combination with my narcotic it does make me very sleepy. It has caused weight gain and some memory issues(forgetting to do certain things, forgetting train of thought or certain words). It is enough to take the edge off all my nerve damage pain along with my fibro pain. Hope you find some relief.
