Has Anyone Weaned Off Effexor/Venlafaxine Extended Release?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

I went on Effexor 37.5mg (lowest dose) to control my anxiety. I’ve only been on Effexor ER for 3 weeks. I didn’t like how it was making me feel and I think it was making my anxiety worse so I asked my family doctor about getting off of it. She said to take one every other day for a few weeks then stop. Unfortunately this is not a good way to wean....I learned a lot about weaning when I went thru hell getting off cymbalta after I was on it for 2 years. I had reservations about going on Effexor… read more

I think part of the problem is that doctors do not know how our individual bodies will react to a medication. Everyone of us is different. What medication can help people can have the opposite effect on others. I am happy with the Effexor's right now. Just as I was happy with the amitryptlene for a while, but then it started to give me anxiety attacks. Another doctor took me off of them. I have been on Effexor for awhile, but when it stops working for me, I will need something else. I don't use lyrica. I hear that it makes you gain weight which is something I don't want to do since I have been losing weight. I said before that it is trial and error to find what works for each individual with fibro. Take care, fellow fibro sufferers.

If you don't mind my asking what you're taking Effexor for. If it's for depression Lamatrogine has the least side effects. Both my daughter who is 12yrs and myself take it. It's a mood stabalizer. I've been on it for at least 8yrs and my daughter for about 2yrs now. Was just asking because I take Effexor for daily headachs and migrains. Hope this helps. Hugs

Is there a lower dose they can give you to slowly wean you off. Maybe the withdrawl wont be so bad since you haven't been on it for long or be as bad. I do know that how the Dr is taking you off is how they do it. I hope it all works out for you. Prayers and Hugs

Doctors are human too and we should all know by now that any meds can come with side effects. I certainly hope that you can find something that works for you.It can take several tries before you find the right med and dosage for you because there are so many and we are all so different. Good luck.

@A MyFibroTeam Member the answer is because the benefits do good..( they outweigh the adverse effects)..I am on multiple meds ..a small dose of a Benzo klonapin a small dose of Zoloft a small dose of gabapentin and a small dose of a muscle relaxer ..before I started the meds I was in a bad way ..I have essential tremor chronic pain DDD various herniated discs...shoulder tear Carpel tunnel anxiety depression etc....fibro too..the meds cocktail had helped me to function ..my psych Dr got it right...others did not...tapering is something you can consider doing with a doctor..who specializes in that..( or a psych nurse practioner who has experience in tapering)I would look for a doctor that does that....and listens to what works for you and guides you on the journey...sending love and hugs..🐼I really do understand....your doctor can give you a different med that will help you and be more gentle for you..so you do not have to worry ❤😇🐾🐈xoxo( a doctor tried to give me the effexor ..it did not work for me.).I had 3 doctors before I found this one who got it right spot on..she was at an impatient facility..the doctors who got it wrong where not interested enough or knowledgeable enough to do the job with me correctly
