Empaths???

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

Wondering how many of us consider themselves an empath? Absorbing the pain of others through our nervous system and unable to process properly- so are suffering greatly?
Would love to hear what you think please?
Thanks

Well bless you for saying it out loud, it definitely does not feel like a gift sometimes.. actually a lot of the time! Sometimes I wish I had a thicker shield lol. Namaste 🙏 💜

I am definitely an empath. I currently have two therapists who are working with me on boundaries, taking on the pain and problems of others. A therapist in the past tried to help me with it, too. I will definitely read Spoon Theory. I need all the help I can get. I have enough of my own problems to keep empathizing so much with others. I think empathy is a good thing, and often missing in our current world, but it can go too far and damage our own health and wellbeing.

I am an empath and my fibro has suffered for it. When my son was critically injured in 2018, I was in constant pain until he started to improve. When he was murdered in 2021, I was practically nonfunctional for a year. Doing better now, but the suffering of others frequently sends my fibro off the rails.

It is a very real problem. I guess the positive is that we have extra experience and understanding to be able to speak into someone else’s experience. Not as positive is when we want to be available, but are not “up to it”. One thing that has helped me is the Spoon Theory, written by Christine Miserandino. Have you read it? She has lupus, but also states that it applies to any chronic condition causing pain and fatigue. It is online. It helped because it provided a way for me to share with others why I just can’t be there today. Not that I don’t want to be, but just not physically able. Fresh out of spoons ☺️. Be kind to yourself 💝
