Has Anyone Else Been Diagnosed With Chronic Kidney Disease From The Pain Medications They Take?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭

When I was a teenager and the pain started getting too intense to handle without taking anything, I started taking a lot of ibuprofen throughout the day. As in, 9-12 pills a day, everyday, for years. My kidneys were rough every time they've been tested in the past few years, and last year they got so bad my doctor had to refer me to a nephrologist who diagnosed me with Stage 2 CKD. She was confused though, because I'm not diabetic and I have low blood pressure, so how did I end up with such bad… read more

My hot tub definitely helped me a great deal when I was in real pain!! I know they are expensive, but they were a saving grace for me!! I also took Oxycodone also when the pain was bad. I hear people say it doesn't help them, and it is really hard to get a prescription, but it helped me early on!! Now I work to change lifestyles - diet, exercise. sleep, (Amitriptyline 10 mg. and Sertraline 25 mg.at bedtime), and Thyroid. When I get a good nights sleep I'm 100% better the next day!! I need Thyroid as I had it removed because of cancer, but I think everyone needs to have their thyroid checked for fatigue.

Ibuprofen and naproxen helped at least momentarily, ibuprofen would only last about an hour or two before it felt like my body was on fire. Naproxen worked much better for me, but I can't take either now. I've been told to take Tylenol now, but I don't find it very helpful and I don't want to damage my liver along with my kidneys. I have this CBD gel that's essential icy hot with CBD oil in it, I've found that helpful when I've used it. Hot baths are really one of the only things that help with the pain now, besides sleeping it off. I'm being referred to a pain psychologist soon, so I'm hoping I'll be helped with that. My physiatrist said she could prescribe me low dose Naltrexone, but I'd have to pay out of pocket and go a little out of the way to a compounding pharmacy to get it. We'll see how it all works out. I'm trying to deal with the fact there's probably nothing safe I can do to completely rid myself from pain now.

Sometimes I do stay in bed all day. I have to occasionally to get the pain to go away. People have suggested that I take Advil and I don't take it because first it does not relieve any of my pains and second I don't want it to affect my kidneys or other organs. I do use topicals such as biofreeze. Icy hot roll on is good for your worst pains. I had pain when I was a teenager too. Sorry you are going through this. I have diabetes and so far my kidneys are okay.A hot bath helps a lot with pain too.

I have a history of thyroiditis, so I get my thyroid checked a couple times a year now to make sure it hasn't come back. So far since the first time it happened, it happened since.
