New Allergies?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Taft, CA

I recently had an allergic reaction (?) to food two days in a row. The only common denominator I could figure out between the two meals that caused it was garlic. The first reaction was more severe and felt like my throat was starting to swell. I had more garlic that night than the next. Thankfully, Benadryl did the trick. Anyone else have a new allergy pop up out of nowhere? Is that a fibro thing or just a wonky random thing?

Members reassured someone experiencing a sudden allergic reaction to garlic that adult-onset allergies can develop at any point in life and are not necessarily related to fibromyalgia, though some shared that gut health issues may play a role in triggering new sensitivities. Several members urged caution with throat swelling symptoms, recommending keeping Benadryl on hand and discussing the reaction with a doctor, while noting that allergy tests don't always capture every potential trigger. A recurring theme was the unpredictable nature of the body, with members sharing their own surprising adult allergies to foods like ginger and bananas, emphasizing the importance of elimination diets and self-advocacy when navigating these unexpected changes.

You can develop an allergy at any point in your life. That's not related to Fibro. It is not fun combined with it though. I hope you feel better. Maybe you should talk to your doctor about it. If your reaction gets worse suddenly you could end up in trouble.

Good luck! If you do an allergy test, just know it's possible to have negative results but still have intolerances or allergic reactions. Allergy tests don't test every single protein or chemical that can trigger a reaction, just the most common.

You can become allergic to anything at any time. Allergies can do this with or without an underlying condition like fibro. Over exposure to anything can cause it too.
Benadryl is my go to as well. My last PCP said only use EpiPen if you actually stop breathing, and that only happened once 😅

I’ve had several allergies pop up as an adult over the years, from food to poison ivy. My doctor attributed these to my gut health at the time. Some of them went away when we addressed my gut issues, but they were mild in comparison.

But nothing that caused my throat to start swelling. That sounds scary. I’m so sorry. Glad the Benadryl worked! 😅

Echoing Donna here, I hope you’ll mention it to your doctor.
