Hypermobility. Anyone Else?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

So apparently it isnt normal to be able to sit with your legs out to the sides (like sitting on your knees but your legs out to the sides), be able to reach behind your back and hold your own hand, do reverse namaste (the lil namaste prayer hand thingy but behing your back), bend you fingers back a bit, bend your arm backwards and knees back wards. Well my mom and sister can do the same but they dont oftwn feel their joints loose and their thumbs out of place. Anyone else? Should I freak out? Im… read more

Don't worry I found out about this when I was your age. My ankles are weak so I fall over more than I normal. Wear good boots with ankle support in the snow and even in summer if need. You need to do exercise that builds the muscles around the ligament. Things like palates are good. Need to try to strengthen your core muscles. (Around stomach and back). This can be hard as it is not always easy with fibromyalgia but does help in the long run. Just start at a basic level especially as your young maybe ask a physio for advice about finding a class.
Joints popping are normal for hypermobity to but avoid doing it as it puts stress on everything. My thumbs can slip in and out with no problem but I avoid it. If your wrists hurt try an elastic bandage for a few days. Hope that helps

Sounds like Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) Hypermobility type. I have that as well as fibro and can do all the things you mentioned. My rhuematologist is a little familiar with it. It’s a challenge since i have tight muscles and fascia, yet loose, lax ligaments. Try not to stretch the parts that are hypermobile. Google EDS Hypermobility and you should find a lot. Good luck fellow β€œzebra”.

Good idea to see your Rheumatologist and ask them some questions sounds like your double jointed to be able to do some of the moves that you can do.

Also you might be a natural contortionist they can bend their bodies like a pretzel and feel absolutely no pain doing so.

Don't freak out at all I am sure that it is perfectly natural for your body. Because we are all individuals and unique. Also because your Mother and Sister can do this that it maybe hereditary.

See what your Rheumatologist says regarding this issue.

Hopefully you are not in too much pain.
