Were You Abused? Was It Long Term?

I’ve read many things that have mentioned fibromyalgia developing from a traumatic event. Child abuse is usually among the top. I was abused until I was 16. Share your thoughts please.

Dean2, I believe it does. I learned to suppress as well. I started working to change the bad habits I’ve learned and make better habits. Because I lived in lies and secrets I did not develop proper tools in how to process life. I had turned off my emotions and gauged them in levels not in a feeling. I disconnected from things I wasn’t even aware of. It’s taken a ton of work and doing things that the old me wouldn’t do like speak in front of people, go places alone, trust (this one was huge!) and just putting myself in situations that weren’t comfortable. I also started retraining my brain. 🧠 You do what you learn. It’s worked remarkably for me. It’s still a daily effort to look for a positive in everything even if the only thing you can think of isn’t much. I’m here if you want help/company trying it out. It’s always better when you have accountability. Sending much love and soft hugs!

I believe fibromyalgia can be caused by trauma and abuse. I went through both growing up and in my first marriage. Actually, about a year later, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. When that happened, I was talking to my psychiatrist, and he said all of that caused the fibromyalgia. He said because I held everything in, it came out in the physical form of fibro.

I was physically and mentally abused for my entire childhood and in a couple of my relationships as an adult. I'm a pretty reserved person and I don't handle confrontation very well, most likely stemming from the childhood abuse. Fear of speaking my mind due to getting a beating has carried on into my adulthood and I suppress a lot. I sometimes wonder if bottling everything down for decades has had an adverse effect on my body.
