Anyone Get Carpopedal Spasms/tetany/claw Hands?
Hi, i'm wondering if anyone else has gotten this phenomenon. I've seen it called carpopedal spasm and tetany and other things. It makes the hands feel numb, and the hands bend involuntarily into this position. It is not painful, but it is a bit scary to lose control of them. This happens to me on occasion and I can't seem to link it to any trigger, so I'm wondering if it's fibro, or possibly something else I've overlooked that can accompany fibro? If this has happened to you, what did you do to… read more
Hi, @onelonelynight. Great name. I'm Viv. I would stretch my fingers wide open, count 1,2,3,4,5 to 10. Then let them get back to side by side. Do on both hands 5X each daily.
2). I would let my thumb go in touching my palm.Leave it there. Next finger, next finger, next finger, next finger till all my fingers are in my palm. Hold them there. Count 1-10. Then let them stretch out again. Do both hands 5X each daily.
3). I would have my all my fingers out & turn my wrist down. Hold & count 1-10. Let it go back up. Hold & count 1-10. Do each wrist 5X.
It had stop my fingers & wrist from freezing stiff. When I write & held my pen for a while, my fingers just freeze as if I'm still holding my pen.
Couldn't move any finger at all.
Also taking magnesium reduces the muscle spasms.
Yes I get this randomly especially in the mornings: mind kind of hurts tho because my hand gets so stuff I have to almost shake or hit my hand to release it from the position. I don’t know why it does that. Frustrating!
medical Definition of carpopedal spasm. : a spasmodic contraction of the muscles of the hands, feet, and especially the wrists and ankles (as that occurring in alkalosis and tetany)
No, not carpal tunnel syndrome, it's carpopedal! Just looked it up. It can be from not enough calcium in the body, hypothyroidism, and one more that I forgot, lol! @A MyFibroTeam Member
I believe you may be referring to carpal tunnel syndrome. It is commonly found in tandem with other diseases, including repetitive motion disorders of the wrists & fingers. If you do repeated tasks (like typing or using a computer mouse), it can become painfully debilitating. Only "cure" is mild surgery to cut the sheath of the carpal (hand) tendon, to keep it from "freezing or cramping with painful spasms. Or you could try paraffin hand soaks, or even Epsom salts in hot water, dissolved in a basin, hot as you can stand it. This has helped me.
