Why Doesn't SSDI Recognize Fibro As A "real" Disability?

A MyFibroTeam Member asked a question 💭
Baltimore, MD

I have worked most of my life since the age of 12. Recently, work got to be too much for me because of the exhaustion, pain, and brain fog. I applied for disability. My lawyer said Social Security does NOT recognize fibromyalgia as a legit disability. I've been denied twice & have an appeal in December. In addition to fibro, I suffer with glaucoma, anxiety, hypertension, rheumatoid & osteo arthritis, and more. Yet, I was blatantly denied. Can't do the diet my doc wants because I can't afford to… read more

It’s not the diagnosis they look at. They want to know how it impacts on your daily life. They don’t care that you come in with cancer, fibro or m.s. What they want to see and measure is how it impacts on your work ability.

Show them how you can’t keep yourself clean, show them how you can’t walk, can’t hold a pencil. Ask them to repeat their questions over and over. Tell them you don’t understand what they are asking, cry, copiously. Stop your answer mid sentence, show them you have brain fog.

Don’t take the extra medication you need to get through this meeting. They need to see you, hear you, smell you at your worst, they need to see your pain, your misery.

It is a terrible thing for us to do. To lose our pride, to be judged on our living reality, to show the world how far we have fallen when it hurts just to climb into a tub. Forget your diagnosis, it’s meaningless.

We all see people with disabilities; blind, wheelchair, uncontrollable body movements etc. working at some capacity or other. God bless anyone who can do this. But, that’s what tribunals, or the people you’re up against, see. They want to know why you can’t do this. You show them why.

Then when this is all over, breath.

A Psychologist will help you win disability. They can give you a cognitive test.I failed miserably Social security has to let you win,,when the brain isn't working properly ( Brain Fog ),,it interferes with you job performance ,can not finish tasks,,can not follow through tasks,,due to memory,,fatigue,,brain fog.Fibromyalgia has a lot of cognitive problems and are easily document by taking the test,,,that is why,,Social Security sends you to a Psychologist last..after many denials,,with the cognitive test,,you win..they do not care about the physical symptoms,,but can not deny the cognitive problems...gentle hugs your way.

I read that only 30% of people who apply for disability actually get it. It's a disgrace. You work your whole life putting into disability and SS but when you need it, you get denied

Hi everyone. I went to court to appeal my disability ruling. Hired a new lawyer. Found out that I had been approved for SSDI 2 years ago (not for fibro) & that the first lawyer I had didn't supply Soc. Sec. with my health records though he had them. So, my case was denied. He was purposely trying to drag out my case to drive up his attorney fees.😣 He never worked on my case! Next court date will possibly be to dispute his claim for fees. You have to work to get paid.

@A MyFibroTeam Member (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators)..I would make a appointment with a Psychologist..and ask for a cognitive test..let her know your memory is not good due to Fibro and submit it when you go to court..you may have to pay for the test..but it is worth it..it will help you win your case for sure..
